在新儒家当中,甚至在整个20世纪的中国人文学术史上,徐复观都是一个具有传奇色彩的人物。他曾为蒋介石的高级幕僚,转向学术界以后,不同于思辨型、书斋型的学者,徐复观以思想史论、时政杂文在历史与现实、东方与西方、学术与政治之间思考和探索,力图把儒家政治理想与民主政治追求结合起来。在书中,徐复观对中国传统思想史上的若干问题进行考证的同时,致力于儒家传统和现代民主理念的嫁接问题。思想深邃,立意卓特,文风雄健,并且涵盖中国经学、史学、哲学诸领域。期间一以贯之的主线,即通过对中国文化作“现代的阐释”,阐扬蕴涵其中的中国人文精神。最近几年,徐复观的名字越来越为文化学术界所关注,上海、天津、湖北等地先后出版了他的著作,讨论他思想的研讨会由海峡两岸大学联合举办。本书的出版将对深入了解徐复观思想起到重要作用。
