《语料库语言学的多因素分析：小词置位研究》一书从认知——功能和心理语言学角度，运用新分析方法探讨了英语及物动词词组的词序变换（又称小词移动）问题。主要目标是提出一种方法论，也就是说，运用语料库、多因素分析和概率论研究方法分析语法现象，要优于那种依赖可接受程度判断和最小对比对测试的传统分析方法。
本书倡导的多因素分析方法考察小词移动有以下优点：可以在细节标准并不明确时描述小词移动，支配这种变换的所有决定因素可以整合成一个统一的假设来解释这种变换，两种结构可以在典型性和相似性上相互参比，能调度准确地预测操母语者在正常产生言语和语篇时可能潜意识地选择哪一种词序（因此通过了极为严格的测试），最后可以根据其预测力对互相竞争的假设加以比较。
除了方法论方面的探讨，本贡研究还触及了一个更具理论性也更具语言学意义的问题：如何解释这些分析结果。本书认为，依据处理努力建构起来的各种语言产生理论在解释这类现象时效果并不理想，这与当代一些学者的看法相悖，而语言产生的互动激活模式则能更妥帖地解释和评估这些结果。
